How it works

How to convert an image to pixel art.

01 — Open

Open a picture

Drop a picture on the tool, paste one, or choose a file: PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, BMP or AVIF, up to 64 MB, 26 megapixels and 16,384 pixels a side. No picture to hand? Press Try a sample.

02 — Choose

Pick the size and the colours

Set the size — the sprite's longer side, from 8 to 512 pixels — and how many colours the sprite may use — from 2 to 64, made from the picture — or put it on a palette.

03 — Download

Take the 1:1 PNG or the enlarged copy

The 1:1 PNG has one file pixel for every art pixel. The enlarged copy is the same sprite scaled up by a whole number, up to 4096 pixels on its long side.

Photo to pixel art or PNG to pixel art, the steps are the same. An animated file gives its first frame, and wide-gamut or HDR photos are converted to standard sRGB, the colour space games use. Want it step by step? Read the guide.

What it does

Built for sprites, not photo filters.

A filter makes a picture look blocky. This is an image to sprite converter: it makes a small file an engine can draw.

One file pixel per art pixel

Ask for 32 pixels and the file's longer side is 32 pixels — 32 × 32 if you choose Square. A smaller picture is never enlarged.

Keep shape, or Square

Square offers Fit, which adds transparent bars, or Fill, which crops to the centre.

Hard-edged transparency

Every pixel is fully opaque or fully transparent, so the sprite has no dark fringe. Soft shadows and glows are not kept.

Flat backgrounds out, empty edges off

Background → Remove takes out a flat backdrop from the edges inwards, and Also clear enclosed areas takes the patches they cannot reach. Trim empty edges cuts the blank border away.

The enlarged copy is for sharing; the 1:1 file is for the game.

Converting animation frames? Untick Trim empty edges, lock the palette, then build the sheet in the Sprite Sheet Toolkit.

Colours

Pixel art palettes: your own, or one of thirteen.

Pixel art is a picture with few colours. You choose where they come from.

From the picture

Choose how many, from 2 to 64. A swatch strip shows the colours; tap one to copy its hex code.

A built-in palette

Nine built-in palettes, and four community palettes credited to their authors. All of them are listed below.

Your game's palette

Paste hex colours or load a .hex file of up to 256 colours. Lock this palette keeps it for the next picture; Copy palette as hex takes it with you.

Find the pixel grid

Fix AI pixel art: snap it to a true pixel grid.

Enlarged pixel art has blocks several pixels wide; AI-made pixel art often has uneven ones that sit on no real grid.

Press Find the pixel grid

It measures the picture and suggests a grid when it can find one; it often works. A clean enlargement saved as a PNG is usually offered the snap as it opens; for a JPEG or anything else, press Find the pixel grid.

See it before anything changes

You see the snapped picture first and decide whether to keep it. It works as a pixel art downscaler: a clean enlargement comes back at its real size, pixel for pixel. After a snap on noisy art, colours closer than its noise are merged, so flat areas mostly come back as one colour; on very small blocks (×3 or less), lower Colours by hand.

Or set the block size by hand

For when it cannot find a grid. Pictures over about 4 megapixels (2048 × 2048) are not measured.

Sprite sizes

Choosing a sprite size: 16 × 16, 32 × 32 or 64 × 64.

Match your game's other art: a sprite at a different pixel size from its neighbours looks out of place.

16 × 16

Items, icons and tiles.

32 × 32

Most characters.

64 × 64

Detailed characters and portraits.

Dithering

Dithering: when to use it.

Dithering mixes two palette colours in a pattern to suggest a third. Dither is under More options, and sits under Palette when the palette has four colours or fewer.

Off

Right for small sprites, where every pixel is a decision.

Pattern

Ordered (Bayer) dithering. Stable from frame to frame and across tile seams.

Blend

Error diffusion (Floyd–Steinberg). Suits photographs at larger sizes, on a palette made from the picture. On a small sprite or a fixed palette it can scatter stray colours.

In your engine

Using your sprite in Unity and Godot.

Import the 1:1 file and turn the engine's smoothing off.

Unity

Set Filter Mode to Point (no filter) and Compression to None.

Godot

In Godot 4, set the default texture filter to Nearest.

Scale it in the engine

Enlarge the sprite by a whole number and every pixel stays square.

Pricing

Free and private.

It is free because your browser does the work, not our servers.

No account, no credits

Converting and downloading cost nothing, however many sprites you make.

Never uploaded

Your browser does the work and your image never leaves your device. Nothing is stored, so download your sprite before you close the tab.

Yours, no watermark

Nothing is added to your sprite and we make no claim on it. Pictures from our AI generators are yours to use commercially, with or without a plan.

The converter does not use AI. It measures your pixels; it does not redraw them.

No art yet?

The converter changes a picture. These make one.

AnnoMotion's AI tools are separate from the converter and use credits. The converter stays free either way.

Describe a sprite and the AI pixel art generator draws it. Or restyle a picture you already have. Then open the result here.

The Spritesheet Generator animates a character into a sheet. Its frames are smooth art, not pixel art.

FAQ

The Pixel Art Converter, answered.

How do I turn an image into pixel art?

Open a picture — drop it on the tool, paste it or choose a file — and a 64-pixel, 16-colour result appears at once. Choose the size, the colours or a palette, then download. It pixelates the whole picture; it does not blur or censor part of a photo.

Is it free, and do I have to sign up?

It is free, with no account, no credits and no watermark. An account is only for the AI tools; the converter never asks for one.

Is my image uploaded?

No. It is processed on your device and never leaves it; we keep no copy, so download your sprite before you close the tab. Like every page on this site, this one is counted as a page view, and the tool adds three usage counts through the site's analytics: that a picture was opened (as a file, a paste or the sample), that a file was downloaded, and that a link to another tool was followed. Nothing about the picture itself is sent — no name, size, colours or pixels. No analytics cookies are set on your device unless you accept them in the cookie banner.

Does it use AI?

No. The converter does not use AI. It measures your pixels; it does not redraw them. The AI tools on AnnoMotion are separate, for when you need original art.

What size should a sprite be?

16 × 16 suits items and tiles, 32 × 32 most characters, and 64 × 64 detailed characters and portraits. The converter makes sprites from 8 to 512 pixels.

Can I get an exact size such as 32 × 32?

Yes: the size you choose, keeping the picture's shape or as a square. Square offers Fit, which adds transparent bars, or Fill, which is a centred crop. The file has exactly that many pixels. It never enlarges a picture that is smaller than the size.

Why is my sprite blurry in my engine?

The engine is smoothing it. Import the 1:1 file and set filtering to point or nearest. In Unity, set Filter Mode to Point (no filter) and Compression to None; in Godot 4, set the default texture filter to Nearest.

Can I use my own palette?

Yes. Under My palette, paste hex colours or load a .hex file, up to 256 colours, and every pixel is matched to the nearest one.

Which palette should I pick?

From the picture gives the closest match. A built-in palette gives a period look: there are nine, among them “Handheld · 4 greens”, “CGA · 16” and “1-bit · black and white”. The four community palettes are credited to their authors: Sweetie 16 by GrafxKid, Endesga 32 by ENDESGA, DawnBringer 16 by DawnBringer and Resurrect 64 by Kerrie Lake.

Does it keep or remove the background?

Transparent areas stay transparent, with a hard edge. Background → Remove takes out a flat backdrop from the edges inwards, so the same colour inside the subject survives; you can pick the colour and set the tolerance. Tick Also clear enclosed areas for patches the edges cannot reach — the gap inside an arm on a hip, the holes in letters. It starts off, because a same-coloured detail inside the subject would go too; very small patches are left, and the status line says when enclosed areas were kept. It is for flat backdrops, not busy photographs.

Can it fix AI-generated pixel art?

Often. Press Find the pixel grid; it suggests a grid when it can find one, and you can set the block size by hand. A clean enlargement saved as a PNG is usually offered the snap as it opens, with a preview; for a JPEG or anything else, press the button. Pictures over about 4 megapixels (2048 × 2048) are not measured.

What is dithering and when should I use it?

Dithering mixes two palette colours in a pattern to suggest a third. Off is right for small sprites; Pattern is stable from frame to frame and across tile seams; Blend suits photographs at larger sizes, on a palette made from the picture, and can scatter stray colours on a small sprite or a fixed palette.

How do I keep several sprites on the same palette?

Convert the first, press Lock this palette, then open the next: the size, the shape and the locked palette carry over, one picture at a time. Nothing is stored, so use Copy palette as hex to keep the palette for another day, or load your game's palette under My palette.

Can I convert animation frames?

Yes, one at a time. Untick Trim empty edges — or press Keep every frame’s framing when the tool offers it — so every frame keeps the same framing, and press Lock this palette so they share their colours. Then build the sheet in the Sprite Sheet Toolkit.
